Getting The Right mp3 ID3 Tag
An ID3 tag is the meta data information attached to an mp3. ID3 tags contain information such as Artist, Song Title, Album Title, Year produced, Track number, etc. This tutorial explains how you can automate the process of populating your ID3 tags.
As mp3 players become increasingly popular, mp3 collections grow larger. Most mp3 players require the ID3 data to display the song title, Album and Artist on their display screens. Populating the ID3 tags of a large mp3 collection manually would take a very long time. MusicBrainz' Picard software automates the task of populating the ID3 tags of your MP3 collection.
There is a link to download Picard on Musicbrainz' site for both Linux and Windows. There are also Mac taggers available as well. I have not tried the mac versions but if you have please leave a comment explaining your experience.
MusicBrainz can rename your mp3's as well as fill in your ID3 tags, make sure you have set your setting for your situation. A full guide to using Picard can be found in the Picard Documentation, so I'll quickly summarize the steps.
Adjust your setting to your needs: File > options
Press the "Add Directory" button, and choose the folder containing your mp3's to sort.
Once the New files have been added you can click on the "cluster" button, this will sort the mp3's into albums.
Next "Analyse" the clustered albums by selecting the albums and clicking "Analyse". This will sort your mp3s into albums and place them in the "Albums" folder.
In order to save the changes you need to highlight the albums and then click "save". At this point your mp3's will be saved with the new filename and ID3 data.
